Rare Books for Sale- In Search of a Rare Book

Rare books can be found in a number of places. From garage and estate sales to antique stores and auctions, those in search of rare books have plenty of options to choose from. Some of these are better options than others, and in the age of the internet, there is one option that outshines the rest. Following some simple tips will ensure that those in search of rare books will find exactly what they are looking for and avoid being tricked into purchasing a book that is not what they think it is.

It is not uncommon to find rare books for sale in unexpected places. One would not expect to see a book of great value lying among the rubbish of someone else’s things, sold as an item no longer required. However, as is reported on the odd occasion, it does happen. Neither would one expect to find such a book lying around someone’s home at an estate sale. Often each of these circumstances occurs when the owners do not realise what they have. The problem with these instances, while they can be quite rewarding, is the epic potential for misidentification of the book.

To avoid embarrassment, it is best for those looking for specific rare books, or even those just curious as to what is available, to use the internet. This can be done in a couple of ways. Check out rare book sites or the rare books section of auction sites and see what’s out there. Those who run these types of sites tend to do a good job of screening and verifying so that buyers know exactly what they are purchasing. The other option is to simply do a search for rare books for sale, or for a specific book. Follow the leads until they lead you somewhere worth going.

It is true that by going online or through a book dealer some finds may be missed, but it is much easier to trust a book dealer who knows what they are talking about than someone who simply believes they are selling old books. When this is the case, the responsibility of all of the research is on the buyer. It is much more effective – and rewarding – to share that responsibility with a seller who knows what they’re doing.
